Wigan Warriors maintained a second half return by St Helens to complete a 24-14 win at Derby on Friday at the Brick Community Stadium.

Wigan had the lead at a break through a Harry Smith penalty, Jai Field converted the test, plus Abbas Miski unconscious effort, just responding with a converting of George Whitby to give the home dress a 12-2 lead at rest.

St. Helens also had to survive by sitting at 12-borne at the end of the first and second start after Moses Shisht was sent to the sin of sin for a high blow to Zach Eckersley.

It was a similar story early in the second to Wigan, though as Sam Walters appeared yellow for a high blow to Jon Bennison.

Although St Hens mount a return of the second half through efforts converted by Lewis Murphy and Agnatius Paasi to bring the score to 18-14, a cruel knock by Tristan Sailor allowed Miski to cross the corner with just two minutes remaining, forcing the convert to finish what is always a great derby win.

Wigan Warriors win continues the trend of the local team by winning the good Friday derby dating back to 2021.

Wigan’s victory also moves them to the second on the Super League table, two points after leaders Hull Kr.

Wigan Show Class to keep saint attacks as visitors early errors

With a strong atmosphere and the two groups of fans loud and proud cheering from the first minute, the scene settled on what is always a derby between the two old enemies.

The defenses were at the top and there was no way for the offensive lines of each party, meaning that Smith called for hitting the stroke in eight minutes after St. Helens were tied to offside, giving the armies a close 2-0 lead.

From there, however, St Helens had good territory and chances, Whitby converting their sentence to level things to 2-2.

Wigan’s Smith thought he had the first trial of the clash when he went under sticks in the 26th minute, but after a check, it was clear that Tyler Dupere had prevented the defenders of St. Helens, so he faded.

However, it was only two minutes later that the fighters finally passed the whitening as Batchelor was knocking, French with the vision and execution to see the field race and to violate the ball in space after the protection of St Helens.

Treatment errors continued to cost the saints as Batchelor came out with his second that led to another test, the hit by Smith not being camped by the saints and musk going to the corner.

St. Helens was put under the pump as the choke was sent to the sin of sin for a high blow to Eckersley, but they managed to grind the last few moments, Wigan entering the 12-2 lead at rest.

As the numbers in the field were then flattened as Walters were sent to the sin of sin for a high on Saints Jon Bennison’s wing, St Helens were the architects of their fall while Paasi sent an unnecessary load that was collected by Wigan.

This allowed the field only a few meetings later to follow you by following a late pass, Smith returning to set the Wigan 18-2 with over half an hour.

The moment then continued to swing between the two sides, but the whole Wigan had to do was wait for one of St. Helens’ experienced players to make a mistake that made the pressure again, the opportunities coming and going to the side of Paul Wellens.

Despite their treatment problems, St Helens continued to fight and finally brought to the 64th minute as an excellent wide mistake, found Murphy who produced a sensational corner diving outcome, whitby marking a fierce conversion to bring the result in 18-8, the examination of the whole game.

Paasi then gave St. Helens fans even more hope as he enabled the short distance with seven minutes left per hour, Whitby converting to make it a four -point game, the visitors feeling that they were too much in it.

However, their hopes collapsed with two minutes to go while Sailor came up with a costly blow that was captured by Eckersley and sent Miski to cross the corner, Smith placing the cream on the cake for a strong 24-14 victory.
