Google has won permission to sell its EEE books and audiobooks directly to customers through its iOS app, Google Play Books. While iOS applications today can provide access to the content previously purchased elsewhere, such as e-books purchased through a website, developers should require a specific exception to connecting their iOS application users to the website company to make purchases.
According to a brief post on Google blog, users will now be able to click on a new “Get Book” button on the Google Play Books iOS app which will take them to the Google Play website for complete their purchase of electronic book or audiobook.
From there, users will be able to see their recent open book lists and complete a purchase using their Google account and saved payment information.
By processing the transaction on its website, Google can avoid paying an Apple commission one (generally 30%) to purchases within the digital content app.
Moreover, iOS app users will be able to share their books with a family group from the Google Play family library, whether the family member uses iOS, Android, or online as their reading or reading device listening.
To allow this change, it appears that Google applied for the exception called the external connection account, which was originally presented as a result of the Apple’s resolution with a Japanese regulator, the Japan Fair Commission (JFTC) in 2022.
The rule focuses on “readers’ applications – means those designed mainly to provide access to some kind of digital content, such as magazines, books, audio, music or video. To use the right, developers must require additional approval from Apple and then follow other rules on how the website appears when clicking their external connection, how the link is formatted, as referred to in the application code, and more Many.
It also specifies that users will need to see a full -screen announcement warning them that they are no longer transaction with Apple after clicking the outer connection.
Netflix was among the first to approve the new rule in 2022 enabling registration of a reconciliation through its website.
Google did not explain why he has only now decided to offer direct purchases, but may have been waiting for the results of the lawsuit between Fortnite Maker Epic Games and Apple.
This case eventually revealed that Apple was not a monopolist, but confirmed that Apple would have to allow app developers to connect to their websites if they chose. The Supreme Court refused to hear the appeal in January 2024, leaving the original decision from the lower courts to stand.
