Google Maps officially updated the name of Mexico bay in the Gulf of America on Monday.
Among many other executive orders, President Donald Trump decreed the day of his inauguration that the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed America. This executive order also changes an act of Obama’s era to rename Mount McKinley to Denal, the name that indigenous people have used for centuries. Similarly, the name Gulf of Mexico has been the most widespread name for the water body since the 16th century.
The President stated that these names are part of a gesture towards “(restoring) American pride in the history of American greatness.”
Since Monday afternoon, Google Maps users in the United States will see the name of Mexico’s bay change to be America’s bay. International users will see both names, while Mexico users will only see Mexico bay. Google already stated in January that it would match Trump’s executive order after the names of the seats were updated in the United States geographical information system.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would send a letter to Google asking the company’s decision to rename Mexico on Google Maps. But Google’s decision to change the breast name is in line with its existing policies about how to navigate the differences between countries. On the mobile, Google changes maps to connect to the location of the user’s place, determined by the user operating system, SIM and network.
While Google has respected Trump’s order, Apple has not yet updated Mexico’s Bay or Denali Bay in his map app. When looking for the “Gulf of America” on Apple maps, the app did not give any results.
Google General Director Sundar Pichai and CEO of Apple Tim Cook both participated in Trump’s inauguration; Cook personally donated $ 1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, while Google also made a $ 1 million contribution.
