The potential ban of TIKTOK in the US has aroused a development of development within the open social community. Some new applications have been built that can one day serve as a tick replacement for those who favor open source, decentralized Bluesky social network, and the technology that empowers it, in the AT protocol.
Although Tiktok’s detention is currently a pause after President Trump gave the parent company a 75-day extension to negotiate an agreement, the fact that the government was able to overthrow Tiktok in the first place, has worried users for its future . Meanwhile, creators and small businesses are highlighted on how loss of tiktok can affect their income.
Building a “tiktok for bluesky”
One solution that appears to address the problem is Bluesky, an open -source decentralized social network, where you can select your server and algorithm and adjust your modification controls according to your needs. Plus, if you ever decide to change the servers, you can move your account easily without losing your username, friends or posts. You can even “execute your bluesky” by placing a personal data server or relay.
Designed for a future network, Bluesky allows people to take control over their personal data and social activity by the Big Tech – an attempt also supported by the open social ecosystem called Feedivers, which goes to a different protocol and includes applications like Mastodon and others.
Now there are some new projects that are being developed to bring a video experience to Bluesky, whether as a first client with Bluesky Video or as a completely new app built into the same thing in the protocol that Bluesky uses.
Below are some of the video applications at different stages of development that are centered on food for Bluesky users.
Display
Built by Berlin developer Sebastian Vogelsang, who previously started the Bluesky Skeets customer app, Bluescreen is a future application that will focus on videos posted on Bluesky’s social network. Similar to its alternative ignitions on Instagram, which is also in the works, Bluescreen is being built quickly thanks to the small ability to reuse some of the same codes from skeets.
Like the ignitions, Bluescreen would offer a first Bluesky video experience, as it filters your current Bluesky resources and lists for video content, allowing loads. Because it is built on the Bluesky network, your videos will also appear on your profile in the official Bluesky app, and people’s comments and other engagement with those videos will appear in the Bluescreen app.
Vogelsang built his first Bluesky prototype in just less than two hours, he says, and has since posted sneaky views of the app to Bluescreen account in Bluesky after it has been further refined.
The app contains a set of interaction buttons similar to those that Tiktok has, including likes, comments, savings/painters, and more.
Remo
Reelo represents a greater attempt to build a Tiktok -like application that appeals to Bluesky users, but unlike other efforts, is not just a layer or filter on top of the existing Bluesky social network. Instead, Reelo is developing its independent application in the AT protocol. This means that Reelo will benefit from the same type of transparency and control over your data as in Bluesky, but will be without construction restrictions on top of Bluesky directly.

This allows Reelo to support more features, including longer video up to three minutes, special effects, a musical library and sound, and later, living. Users will be able to post their video content directly to the app. As the company explains in a post in Bluesky, this does for a “richer experience, more video -fitted” compared to other applications built in Bluesky, as rival Skylight, for example.
However, the construction of its application in the protocol instead of creating an application that is just a layer in Bluesky itself means a longer development time term. Reelo expects to end the end of the front and back by the end of February with a departure on March 20, after an initial test period.

Like most developing applications, Reelo also looks very much like tiktok, with a vertical video source and ways to like, comment and divide on the right side of the screen.
Light window
The team behind Skylight worked to build a Tiktok alternative after Mark Kuban said he was interested in supporting possible beginnings in the area.
The team behind the app includes Seattle Victoria (“Tori”) co -founders White, which has a background in building websites and custom applications, and React Reed Harmeyer developer. The founders are marketing of light as a “in the Tiktok Protocol”, which is technically accurate because the bluesky itself works in the protocol.
However, by constructing skylight as a layer on top of the existing Bluesky platform, the app goes to restrictions.
Bluesky’s social network limits videos to 60 seconds in length and 50MB size. In other words, if Skylight wants to add support for longer videos or other features, it will have to wait for Bluesky to change its instructions or develop its dedicated application built into the protocol. (Skylight founders did not accept an interview, so it is not clear what their long -term road map looks like.)
Skylight has an advantage of types, as its video -focused app is already in the beta testing in iOS and Android, allowing early adopters to try it before its public release.
App characteristics include likes, follows, comments and profile pages. Video uploads are still at work.
Video for Bluesky
Recently launched on the App Store, videos named Generally for Bluesky is another application built on top of Bluesky himself. This new app comes the courtesy of “MSZPRO”, Aka Hoshida Takiyoshi, a Japanese Indie developer.
Takiyoshi has always wanted to experiment, having built about 60 applications so far, including the Sorasns app that offers combined access to decentralized mastodon, Bluesky, Misskey and Firefish networks.
Like some of the others, videos for Bluesky allow you to browse the videos posted on the Bluesky social network by moving vertically on a user -like user interface with popular buttons, repost and response.
The app also contains user profiles, integrated search, buttons tracking and its local time “for you” that presents video trends, as well as ways to watch other videos from the people you follow or any custom source. Moreover, the app is created with an algorithm that will learn your interests over time, says the developer.
Its latest updates have added support to other features such as announcements and a new composer Post -focused posting of video loads, among other things.
With a one -time purchase “pro” unlocked within the application, users can access mail analysis information and watch videos from a custom time limit.
Soon, it will add NSFW filtering, a video recorder, style filters, downloads, bookkeeper and more.
Videos for the Bluesky app are only iOS, but if there is enough user request, the developer will consider building an Android version.
“Bluesky is still a relatively new platform, but its well -documented protocol makes it easier for Indie developers like me to integrate new features,” Hoshida notes. “Unlike centralized social media, Bluesky API does not require applications manufacturers to be recorded in a developer account, which helps more people jump inside and start building immediately. And of course, as it is sourced to Open, developers can easily look at the code to see how to interact with different API features. “
Later, the developer plans to work on other social applications, including one for the photo -focused bluesky and a Fediversity news reader.
While the newest Flipboard Surf app is more than just a video aggregator, the app recently added a video of it after Bluesky added its custom source.
Surf initially focused on video posts from Feed Feed Video Bluesky and others involving hashtag #skytok, “but aims to soon personalize the source for the final user in future developments. The latter would distinguish it from food Bluesky’s video and would make it more interesting for each individual user.
Bluesky’s video food is available in the surf app, where people can also build their own custom resources to follow all types of posts across the open social network, including Bluesky, Mastodon, RSS, and more .
Surf is still in private beta testing, but a registration list is available to people who are interested.

Canceled: Bluesky coils
On 2/1/24, Merry said he was abandoning the project. The original information is below:
Bluesky Reels (its website is not LIVE yet) is another project that sees the potential for a tiktok replacement in the market. Developed by Craig Merry, the client will only support videos as well as basic user interactions. Over time, support for other personal data servers besides Bluesky itself can be included.
The content of the app comes from Bluesky itself, though the goal is to add more features that Bluesky does not have.
“My main goal is to build a simple way for people to create curated resources – with content that can be moderated directly – many like moderation in Reddit,” Merry explains.
Updated after publication to refer which projects have been canceled since then.
