Hyundai said Monday it would send customers who bought or leased an EV before Jan. 31 a free charging adapter that would allow them to access Tesla's Supercharge network.
The adapter will enable Hyundai EVs equipped with the CCS port to access more than 20,000 Tesla Superchargers in the United States, Hyundai said. The free adapters will be available to eligible owners of the 2024 and earlier model year Kona Electric, Ioniq hatchback, Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. Hyundai said the 2025 Ioniq 6, Ioniq 5 N and Kona Electric vehicles are also acceptable.
Customers will have to request the free NACs adapter through the MyHyundai online owner portal.
Support for Tesla's connector and charging port — called the North American Charging Standard — has accelerated since Ford and GM announced plans in 2023 to integrate the technology into their next-generation EVs and sell adapters to owners EV current. Until then, every EV except Tesla used Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors.
Almost every other automaker has followed suit, partnering with Tesla to offer customers a NACs adapter. Some, including Lucid, are planning to integrate the charging port into future EVs.
The rollout hasn't been as smooth as some hoped, however, with many non-Tesla customers still waiting for adapters. However, some automakers have started shipping adapters in recent months.
