When Openai debuted in her Chatgpt image generation feature last week, social media exploded when users realized they could make images created by what they looked like from a movie animated by the studio Ghibli. Fans hoped that studio master Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki would take a stand, but the 84-year-old animator stayed silent. At Subreddit Ghibli Fan, however, fans are implementing a long stop against that art.
“I just noticed about a dozen different posts” ban he Now “here seemingly driven by a ghibli art influx on other pages,” a moderator posted on Subreddit Ghibli last week. “We do not allow that art. We have not permitted it basically after something was done.”
These fans do not see the copies created by him as an homage to the iconic artist. On the contrary, these generating models are trained in images protected by artists such as Miyazaki, who never gave Openai or any of his competitors permission to use their work as such.
This issue is what has also influenced other creators and writers. New York Times and other publishers have sued Openai, claiming that the company used its copyright protected materials to train its models without pay or consent. Similar complaints have been raised against meta and midjourney.
The Gibli situation reached a particularly strong nerve among fans since the studio master, Hayao Miyazaki, has been vocal for his hatred of works of art generated by him.
“I can’t see these things and see interesting,” Miyazaki said in documentary footage from 2016 in which he was 3D animation generated by him. “Whoever creates this thing has no idea what pain is whatever it is. I am completely disgusted.”
People have also generated portraits in the style of pixar films or Illustrations Dr. Seuss. Even the White House account posted an image of the Gibli style, harshly mocking a woman to cry while handcuffed by ice.
While more “GhibLified” images spread online, fans of the 84-year-old legendary animator reappeared his comment to discourage others to imitate his work, but the damage was already done. Of course, not all of these are images of Ghibli style, but the popularity of these images has extended the capacity of the company.
Openai’s Brad Lightcap, which oversees daily operations in the company, said that over 130 million users have generated more than 700 million images with this new chatgt feature.
“The range of visual creativity has been extremely inspiring,” LightCap wrote.
