The US Department of Justice is still calling for Google to sell its Internet Chrome browser, according to a Friday appearance.
Doj first proposed that Google sell Chrome last year, under then President Joe Biden, but seems to be standing with that plan under Trump’s second administration. The department, however, is no longer calling for the company to divert all its investments in artificial intelligence, including the billions of Google poured into anthropic.
“Google’s illegal behavior has created an economic goliath, one that destroys over
The market to ensure that – no matter what happens – Google always wins, “said Doj in a submission signed by OMED ASSEFI, his current Attorney General for Antitrust.
For this reason, Doj said that it has not changed the “essential ingredients” of its initial proposal, including the displacement of Chrome and a prohibition of payments related to the distribution partners.
In him, Doj said he is no longer calling for the “mandatory shift of Google’s investment” and will rather be satisfied with the “Preliminary Notice for Future Investments”. He also said that instead of giving Google the opportunity to divert Android now, he will leave a future decision to the court, depending on whether the market becomes more competitive.
This proposal follows the antitrust lawsuits filed by Doj and the 38 general prosecutors of the state, the main judge Amit P. Mehta to rule that Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in the Internet search. Google has said he would appeal to Mehta’s decision, but in the meantime offered an alternative proposal that he said he would address his concerns by providing more flexibility with partners.
A Google spokesman told Reuters that comprehensive proposals to do continue to go miles beyond the court ruling and would harm consumers, economy and national security. “
Mehta is scheduled to hear arguments from both Google and Doj in April.
