Since 2022, the Tumblr blog site has harassed its plans to integrate with fediver – Open Social Website powered by protocol activity also used by Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, and others. Now, the Automattic blog platform is sharing more information on when and how that integration can actually happen.
As it turns out, the current plan to connect Tumblr to the open social network will come through the planned site movement in the WordPress infrastructure.
Automattic confirmed to Techcrunch that when migration is complete, every Tumblr user will be able to federate their blog through Actitterpub, just like any WordPress.com user can today.
The company noted that migration can also allow other open integrations online, such as giving tumblr users a way to execute or other custom topics.
Last summer, Automattic announced that it would relocate its half billion blogs to WordPress to make it easier for the company to build tools and features that operated on both services while also allowing Tumblr to benefit from open source developments by WordPress.org.
Although the WordPress community itself is in a state of turmoil, ultimately Tumblr’s latest direction at WordPress would allow greater efficiency, not changing the interface and experience that Tumblr’s user base has grown in love.
Automattic refused to share a time frame that when migration would be complete, given its degree, but a representative for the company called progress so far “exciting”.
Users have been curious about the company’s open social integration status, which Tumblr said in 2023 were still working. Recently, one user asked for company plans in a Q&A on Tumblr’s job blog in Progress. Here, Tumblr confirmed that the integration of fediverse was “a great reason” for the migration itself, and that “surely” will include support for existing WordPress’ Activity Open Social Activity.
However, Automattic refused to share whether at any moment he would consider integration with the AT protocol, which strengthens the growing start of Bluesky social networks, another open social participant on the Internet.
When asked specifically how Bluesky could enter these plans, a spokesman would only comment on his activity.
