Y Combinator, one of the most fruitful accelerators of the world, sent a letter on Wednesday asking the Trump administration to openly support the act of digital markets of Europe (DMA), a large part of the legislation aiming to destroy the power of the Big Big Tech.
DMA appoints six technology companies such as online “alphabet”, Amazon, Apple, Bytedance, Meta, and Microsoft – and restricts these technology kingdoms to be included in anti -ompative tactics in their platforms, in favor of interaction. The law became applicable in May 2023, and it has already had a major impact on American technology companies.
In a letter to the White House posted on X by YC public policy chief Luther Lowe, the start -up accelerator argued that DMA should not be collected with other European technology legislation, which US officials often criticize as dominant.
On the contrary, YC argues in the letter that the spirit of the European DMA is in line with the values they promote – not hinder – American innovation.
“(W) respectfully encourages the White House to reassess its attitude towards the digital regulation of Europe, drawing a clear line between measures that hinder innovation and those that promote it,” says YC letter, which was also signed by YC -backed beginnings, independent technology companies and trade associations.
It is not entirely surprising that the YC would come out in clear public support of DMA. After all, the accelerator trades himself as a champion of “Little Tech”-an American ecosystem backed by technology start-up enterprises.
YC argues in the letter that DMA opens the main ways to create opportunities for US beginnings, consumer research and applications, and prevents large boxing technology enterprises smaller enterprises.
Specifically, the YC in its letter says Apple is reported to delay its version of Syria by 2027, years after competitors brought in the market’s voice generating assistants. YC argues that this represents a lack of competitive pressure, stressing that the developers of the third parties of the voice assistants are unable to integrate their services into Apple operating systems
The YC can get a large task technology for its reported anti -compliant behavior and take shots at the company like Apple, for which it argues damages the start -up ecosystem. But YC and other supposedly small technology-related VCs are becoming very influential in Washington.
Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z), who published a “small technology agenda” last year, spends millions of dollars trying to affect policy battles at the federal and local level. According to data from open secrets, A16Z contributions during the 2024 US election cycle reached $ 89 million. YC, still a smaller player in American politics, contributed about $ 2 million.
What is the least clear here is how the Trump administration will respond to the long -term DMA – and the approval of YC for it.
President Trump signaled in January that he would protect American technology companies from excess European regulators. However, Trump has also been historically harsh in major technology firms such as Apple, Google and Meta.
During the Paris Action Summit he in February, Vice President JD Vance criticized some of the EU laws against technology companies, including the Digital Services Act and the General Regulation on Data Protection. However, Vance did not mention DMA, which is most closely aimed at the practices of the anti -ompative technology industry.
Lowe told Techcrunch last year during a strict event that DMA is “not perfect, but at least they are getting a knife understanding how we brake the most wild forms of self-chief from these big firms.”
Lowe did not immediately respond to Techcrunch’s request for comment.
